JOB SUMMARY
 
This position is responsible for enforcing county ordinances, writing tickets to violators, and rescuing animals.
 
MAJOR DUTIES
 

• Enforces county ordinances.
• Captures and impounds dangerous or stray animals.
• Provides expert testimony in court cases; gathers evidence.
• Rescues trapped animals and picks up injured animals.
• Writes incident reports; issue warnings and citations; investigates reports of animal attacks/cruelty.

 

• Provides care to animals in the department’s care.
• Patrols public areas, responds to service calls and works in the shelter.
• Organizes adoptions; picks up surrendered animals and donations.
• Euthanizes unclaimed or gravely injured animals.
• Transfers animals to rescues.
• States documentation on spay and neuter on adoption contracts.
• Cleans kennels.
• Teaches rabies prevention and control; teaches about animal health issues; educates the public about animal welfare and animal control laws and regulations.

 

• Removes wild animals from residential homes or businesses.
• Provides Parvo shots to animals.
• Participates in on call duty every three weeks.
• Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
 

• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to animals.
• Knowledge of computers and job related software.
• Knowledge of animal behavior and symptoms of sickness in animals.  
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in interpersonal relations.
• Skill in report writing.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
 
The Animal Control Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and nature and propriety of the final results.
 
GUIDELINES
 
Guidelines include county ordinances, state and federal laws, traffic laws, standard operating procedures, and county policies. The guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.  
 
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
 

• The work consists of animal control and administrative duties. Dealing with irate pet owners and euthanization contributes to the complexity of the position.

 

• The purpose of this position is to enforce county ordinances, write tickets to violators, and rescue animals. Success in this position will contribute to the health and safety of residents and the animal population.

• Contacts are typically with public, Police Officers, EMT, Firefighter, Department of Natural Resources, 911 Dispatch, co-workers, and businesses.

 

• Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.

 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
 

• The work is typically performed at a desk while intermittently sitting standing, stooping, walking, bending, and crouching. The employee occasionally and frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes sense of smell.

 

• The work is typically performed in an office, a very noisy place or outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, or grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious, infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

 
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
 
This position supervises Animal Control Officer in training (2).  
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.

 

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 
     PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

• Two years of related experience.
